Growing up in Moorpark, Noelia Lopez Vasquez always found joy in making people smile. As a child, Noelia loved telling jokes and finding small ways to brighten someone’s day. That instinct – to help others feel seen and cared for – would later become the heart of her business.
Initially, starting a flower business wasn’t Noelia’s idea. She wanted to be an entrepreneur but focused initially on helping children from low-income backgrounds. And then, Noelia met her husband while buying flowers for her mother’s birthday.
Watching her mother’s face light up when she received the bouquet left a lasting impression. She realized she could help people in another way – making them feel good through flowers. Her husband had already started selling flowers, and Noelia quickly saw the potential to grow the idea. She began helping him, and together the couple began building what would become Moorpark Floral Designs.
At first, every step felt uncertain. They carried only a small number of flowers, unsure if they would sell. Over time, as customers returned and word spread, the business slowly began to flourish.
“We started with almost nothing – just $40 left and a lot of hope that our community would support us.”
When they secured their first storefront, the reality of entrepreneurship became even more tangible. Noelia and her husband scraped together and borrowed money to open their doors with just one refrigerator, two tables – one of them borrowed – and three shelving units purchased on a personal credit card. On opening day, they had only $40 left after investing everything into the business. Despite having limited resources and little formal business knowledge, they held onto one powerful belief: that their community would support them. That belief proved true. The Moorpark community embraced the shop, often sharing that the town had needed a flower shop and that they were glad Moorpark Floral Designs was there. Customers not only returned again and again, but even donated vases to support the business, helping Noelia keep prices accessible while continuing to grow.
“Seeing someone smile when they receive flowers reminds me why I started. It is the same joy I felt as a child when I tried to make people laugh.”
The name of the business reflects both home and heritage. The couple chose to honor the community they love – Moorpark – while also recognizing their roots. Noelia grew up locally, and her husband emigrated from Guatemala, which is symbolized in their logo by the quetzal bird. For Noelia, the mission remains simple and deeply personal: helping people express emotion and connection through flowers, whether celebrating joyful moments or honoring loved ones.
