A second generation Ojai native, Sarah Turner has deep roots in both Ventura County and Santa Barbara. “I grew up in Ojai, graduated from UCSB and started working as a staff accountant at Nasif, Hicks, Harris & Co., LLP here in Santa Barbara shortly after I graduated,” said Sarah. “I still live in Ojai with my husband and three daughters, with family nearby. Family support has been very important to me as I have been building my career as a CPA and raising three children at the same time.”
Sarah became interested in becoming a CPA while she was working as a teller at a local bank. “I ended up going back to college and studying business economics with an emphasis in accounting.” It was obviously a great decision since 15 years later she’s still with Nasif, Hicks, Harris & Co, now as an Audit Partner, and she says that being a CPA has been a wonderful career.
When we asked Sarah if the new tax laws are going to make her life easier or more complicated she told us, “Well, it depends! For some taxpayers, the tax law will simplify their tax preparation, with the new larger standard deduction available. However, for other taxpayers, it will be more complicated, and it is always a challenge learning and implementing a new tax law, especially one with a lot of reforms and still pending guidance. My firm and I are definitely ready for the challenge!”
Sarah was introduced to WEV in 2016 by former Board Member Rachelle Barnier who invited her to an event visiting WEV supported businesses. “I immediately connected with the mission of WEV, with both supporting women owned business and other local, small businesses as well.” She became a Founding Member of the League because she felt it was a great way to publicly show her support for the important work that WEV does.
Since having a family and a career are her most important life goals, it’s not surprising Sarah looked to her grandmother as her first role model. “My entire life I learned so much from my grandmother who recently passed away after living 99 amazing years!”
Hard working, dependable, and well-rounded are words Sarah believes people would use to describe her and no doubt those characteristics have helped her to successfully balance her career and family over the years.
