Please join us in welcoming three new staff members to the Santa Barbara office:
2006 Westmont graduate Garrett Fujiwara will be working part-time as an intern for the Small Business Loan Fund (SBLF). Garrett seeks experience in the microfinance field and will perform an array of tasks, including case management and administrative support for the Loan Fund.
Emily Malin, a graduate student from UC Berkeley has joined WEV this summer as a Microenterprise Research Intern, funded by a grant from the Citigroup Foundation. Emily will assist WEV in its annual Microtest data collection project by conducting client surveys and analyzing critical data which will help WEV modify and improve services and measure program impact.
2009 Westmont graduate Finley Balma joins WEV as Program Assistant. Finley’s double major in Sociology and Spanish and interest in microenterprise are a nice fit for the position. We wish departing Program Assistant Eva Wong luck as she and her husband move to Virginia!
Finally, WEV itself will have a new look on the web! WEV’s updated website will be coming to a monitor near you…by the end of June!
WEV Celebrates 88 Graduates
Congratulations to 88 graduates from the Spring 2009 Self-Employment Training course! The ceremony was held on May 18th at Fess Parker’s Doubletree Resort in Santa Barbara, and brought together all graduates from Santa Barbara and Ventura counties. After inspiring speeches from the six class representatives and instructors, each graduate delivered their elevator speech and received their certificate of graduation. These 88 clients join the ranks of over 1,500 SET graduates!
Contract Opportunities with SB’s Metropolitan Transit District
Become a certified Disadvantaged Business Enterprise (DBE) through the California Unified Certification Program (CUCP) and bid on contracting opportunities with the Santa Barbara Metropolitan Transit District (MTD). For FY 2010 (from July 1, 2009, through June 30, 2010), MTD anticipates that approximately 24% of the agency’s operating expenses will be available for contracting opportunities.
Typically, DBE firms are small businesses with primary minority or woman ownership. If you believe your firm may qualify for certified DBE status, visit the CUCP at the Caltrans website at www.dot.ca.gov/hq/bep/ucp.htm. MTD is not a certifying agency, but at your request will assist you in applying for certification.
If you have further questions, please contact MTD’s DBE Officer at (805) 963-3364, or visit MTD’s website at www.sbmtd.gov.

WEV Artist: Beth Goldberg June – July
Beth Goldberg (Beth M Photography) 805-798-5401 firstname.lastname@example.org
My interest in photography started almost 30 years ago when I won a 110 film camera from a contest I entered in the local newspaper. My first “exposure” to a dark room was in high school where I was fortunate enough to attend a school that had a photography program.
I attended New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts and later transferred to Brooks Institute of Photography in Santa Barbara, CA, where I received my Bachelor of Arts degree as a professional photographer.
All of my photographs are taken with a film camera. Film captures light and color like no other digital camera can. Using film provides me with wide textures and colors which brings out the beauty in each landscape photograph.
