Miriam Hospodar
August-September 2008
First I dream my painting, then I paint my dream. -Vincent Van Gogh
Miriam Hospodar holds a BA in Art History from Oakland University and a BFA in illustration from the California College of the Arts. She studied Tibetan thangka painting extensively with Pema Wangyal of Dolpo, a Nepali painter from a long ancestral line of lama/artists. Miriam’s art reflects her interest in Eastern spirituality and her deep passion America’s authentic music tradition, the blues. Her images combine religious and tribal motifs and personal symbols with the inspiration she draws from blues music and meditation. Miriam has studied techniques and materials used in traditional Indian painting and textile dyeing. She makes metallic paint from 23K gold leaf, and employs mostly natural mineral and rare gem pigments such as malachite, lapis lazuli, hematite and amazonite. “The process of creating a painting,” she says, “is a way for me to enter and play in sacred space.”
