Maria Elena De Guevara is the owner and Principle Consultant with HR Works and has worked in the human resources field for over 30 years. She was the Associate Vice President of Human Resources for both Santa Clara University and San Jose State University where she was responsible for the full range of HR services. Under her leadership the SJSU HR team was named 2007 Quality Improvement Team of the Year for the California State University system. Additionally, the SJSU HR Department received the 2007 Western Region IPMA-HR Award for Agency Excellence. Prior to her work with San Jose State, Maria Elena was the Director of Human Resources for the City of Redwood City. During her 10-year tenure with the city, Maria Elena led the department’s transformation from a traditional Personnel Department to a value-added business partner. The Redwood City HR Department received several awards for best practices in measuring HR effectiveness.
Maria Elena has facilitated numerous workshops and has presented at several conferences both in the United States and Mexico. She shares her passion for HR by teaching at Santa Barbara Business College and Women’s Economic Ventures. She received her Master’s Degree in Human Resource and Organizational Development from the University of San Francisco and her Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Santa Clara. She also holds certifications in Emotional Intelligence, Executive Coaching, and Diversity. Maria Elena was the past President for the Northern California Chapter of IPMA-HR and Past-President of the Western Region IPMA-HR. She was also a Board member for the Western Region CUPA-HR as well as for the San Jose Day Nursery.
When there is down time Maria Elena enjoys riding motorcycles with her husband or dancing the night away.
