What prompted you to start your own business / ¿Porqué decidio abrir su propio negocio?

We always had the idea to start a business. Our intention was to start a business in Mexico but the opportunity presented itself here so we had to take advantage. When I heard about the Self-Employment Training course on the radio, I decided to take the class to learn more about the steps to open a business. In the months after the course, I was waiting for the right opportunity to come along, and it did with Tacos El Tizón. First we rented the taqueria to see how the clientele reacted to our food. It went slowly at first because we didn't have money for advertising, but we decided to purchase the business when we saw sales continue to increase after the first few months.

La idea siempre estaba. Pensé abrir un negocio en México pero realmente la oportunidad se dió aca entonces no pudimos regresar. Un anuncio del curso de Capacitación Empresarial salió en la radio y decidí inscribirse en la clase para conocer las oficinas del gobierno y cómo administrar un negocio. En los meses después de completar el curso, estaba esperando que la oportunidad se diera, y llegó la oportunidad con Tacos El Tizón. Primero rentamos El Tizon porque quisimos ver cómo reaccionaba la clientela con nuestra comida. Iba bien pero lento como no teníamos dinero para la publicidad. Vimos que se aumentaron las ventas en los primeros meses entonces tomamos la decisión de comprar.

The course helped me a lot - everything was so much easier after taking the course! It helped guide me in the finances, marketing and overall operation of the business. After taking the course, I had so much confidence to move forward and make the business a success.

What prompted you to start your own business / ¿Porqué decidio abrir su propio negocio?

I have always wanted to open a business in the food industry. I've been a cook and taquero in Mexico since 1986, and come from a family of taqueros. I worked and was part-owner of another business from 2006 until 2010, but decided to buy Taqueria Guerrero. My goal was to become independent and establish myself as a business owner.

Mi idea siempre ha sido tener un negocio de comida. Tenia experiencia in México como cocinero y taquero desde el 1986, y vengo de una familia de taqueros. Trabajaba y fui socio en otro negocio desde el 2006 hasta el 2010, pero decidí comprar Taqueria Guerrero. La idea era independizarse y tratar de consolidarse como negociante.

How did WEV help you start Taqueria Guerrero? / ¿Cómo le ayudó WEV abrir Taqueria Guerrero?

The course helped me most in the overall administration, operations and finances of the business. I took the course in September 2008 after my brother Aureliano graduated from the course in May 2008, and bought Taqueria Guerrero in 2010. I started with five employees and now have about 10 full-time employees (including myself and my wife) and one part-time employee. We keep going little by little; maybe we'll open another business someday!

El curso me ayudó en la forma de administrarse, un poco más en consolidarse en el negocio, y organización con el negocio. Inscribí en el curso en septiembre del 2008 después que me mi hermano Aureliano se graduó del curso en mayo del 2008. Comenzé el negocio con cinco empleados y ahora tengo 10 empleados de tiempo completo (incluyendo mi y mi esposa) y un empleado parcial. ¡Seguimos poco a poco, y quizás abriremos otro negocio!

What advice do you offer others who might want to start their own business? / ¿Qué es lo que recomendarias a las personas que desean comenzar su propio negocio?

I would recommend informing and preparing themselves first; go to WEV! Have a very clear idea of what you want to do, and don't try to start in an industry in which you have little or no experience. Being a business owner is very nice, but there's not much time to rest. I see the success of the business as a three to four-year process during which you study the details and failures, work hard, and recognize the results.

Recomiendo orientarse e informarse primero; vete a WEV. Si tiene nociones de lo que vaya a hacer – eso cuenta mucho. No se meten en algo en que no tienen experiencia. Ser patrón es muy bonito pero no se da la oportunidad para descansar mucho. Todo es un proceso de 3-4 anos, hay que estudiar las fallas y los detallitos, trabajar muy duro, pero al final de cuentas los resultados están.
